Twinning visit

Twinning Association

Saturday 28 April

Wendover Twinning Association will be hosting a party of friends from Liffré who will arrive on Saturday 28 April for a long weekend, and the committee is currently organising the programme of entertainment.

In spite of all the bad feeling that the press is determined to whip up between England and France, our Liffréen friends love coming here: many come year after year and are committed Anglophiles.  It is pleasing to note that new visitors who arrive very apprehensive about what Wendover (and England in general) has in store for them leave determined to come back at the earliest opportunity.  This is an attitude that  we should foster – after all, the Town Twinning  movement started soon after 1945 when it was vowed that Europe should never again be torn apart by war: the original idea was to establish and maintain friendships between countries. Our link with Liffré was sealed in 1976 with a signed charter which  is on display on the end wall of Wendover Library along with various gifts received over the years. We really want to keep the momentum going and to accomplish this we need new members of all ages.

However this is first and foremost a call to arms!  Can you help us by hosting a family, a couple or just one single Anglophile from Saturday 28 April to Tuesday 1 May?  There will be a programme of events and plenty of back-up for the nervous host, and you really don’t need to speak French.  Many of our Liffréen friends speak some English and Association members can help out.  For more information please phone one of the following: Barbara Jefford  624708; Mike Greaves 622778; Glynis Smith 625565.
